Winter Weather Safety

Keep Informed: Keep up to date with weather forecasts and warnings from the Met Éireann (Ireland weather service) or the Met office (UK weather service) Clear pathways: Remove snow and ice regularly to prevent slips and falls. Traffic control: Mark icy areas and redirect traffic away from hazardous zones. Inspections: Regularly check equipment and scaffolding for ice buildup. New Quad Bikes & ATV Regulations.

The new regulations by the Health and Safety Authority, which come into effect on November 20th, include the introduction of compulsory helmet wearing while using Quad Bikes & ATV. All operators must also under go safety training. Under the new regulations, helmets must have chin straps. Cyclist helmets or workplace hard hats are not acceptable. HSA launch guidance on the dangers of UV rays for outdoor workers

Today, Thursday 15th June, the UV (ultraviolet) rays in Ireland are above 6. According to the UV Sun Index this means there is a high risk to skin exposure and sun protection is required.” In Ireland, skin cancer is the most common cancer with 13,000 cases diagnosed annually. People who work outdoors have a higher-than-average risk of skin cancer. The Construction Safety Partnership (CSPAC) an Advisory Committee to the board of the Health and Safety Authority (HSA,) has developed a quick information guide for employees and safety representatives to raise awareness about the risk of skin cancer from sun exposure.
